Parent Coaching
Why Parent Coaching?
My experience as a network consultant on several current reality television programs has caused
me to consider the potential benefits of some intervention models demonstrated on these shows. I
believe that programs such as Nanny 911 and Supernanny have devised an excellent model for
helping parents regain control of chaotic family life. Where these shows tend to fall short,
however, is in addressing the psychological motivations for maintaining chaos and resisting
positive change. Therefore, while these shows provide an excellent example of positive parenting
skills, they often do not address the specific concerns of the individual viewer. The goal of
Parenting Coaching is to provide this model in a way that addresses your unique and specific
needs.
What is Parent Coaching?
Parenting Coaching is the equivalent of a behavioral "House Call." Coaching usually takes place in
four phases: (1) Initial Consultation; (2) Observation and Planning; (3) Implementation and
Training; and (4) Follow-up and Adjustment. The first stage takes place at my office with the
parents, in order to gather background information and discuss concerns and goals. Each of the
three following stages takes place at your home during a classically "chaotic" time period in the
day.
During the "Observation and Planning" stage, I come to your home and observe family interactions
over a three-hour period. I then take the information I have gathered from the observation and
develop a plan for positive behavior change.
During the "Implementation and Training" stage, I come to your home and introduce the plan to
the family and begin to implement the plan over a three hour period. During this time, parents
are encouraged to observe and ask questions. During the last hour of this stage, parents begin to
take charge of the plan while receiving ongoing support and training in its implementation.
During the "Follow-up and Adjustment" stage, I come to your home and observe the parents
implementing the plan with their family over a three hour period. Ongoing support, training, and
adjustments are made during this phase.
How is this different from Traditional Therapy?
In family and behavioral therapy, the goal is to change behaviors and interactions. However, this
approach takes place in the therapist's office, an environment which is very different from that in
which the difficulties occur. By providing Parenting Coaching in the home, the likelihood that
behavior change will occur and persist increases greatly over the classic therapeutic model.
